Local Attractions

Doe Castle

Situated on a beautiful inlet of Sheephaven Bay not far from Corcreggan Mill, is the historic, ancient seat of the Mac Sweeney Chiefs of Doe. The building was restored around 1800 and is now in the care of the Office of Public Works.

Dunfanaghy Workhouse

The Workhouse was the scene of horrific suffering during the Great Famine of 1845-1850. Today part of this building has been turned in to interpretative centre and art gallery. Exhibitions are regularly held here.

Glenveagh National Park

This national treasure lies in the heart of the Derryveagh Mountains. The park covers 14,000 acres with its Glenveagh Estate, the hills and its peatlands. It is a haven for plants and animals in general, with peregrine falcons, deer, arctic mountain hares, ravens and golden plovers. Glenveagh successfully reintroduced Golden Eagles to Ireland in 2001.

Tory Island

There are a number of islands lying close to us, the largest being Tory (Toraigh) which is nine miles from the mainland. A daily ferry service is available during the summer months from Magheroarty Pier and a warm welcome is assured from the King of Tory, Patsy Dan Rodgers. On Tory Island you can visit the gallery which houses the works of the renowned Tory Island School of Painters. Tory Island is also a bird watchers' paradise and is home to many different types of bird life.

Summer-time brings plenty of festivals around the County itself. These can exhibit the traditional aspects of life in Donegal through the ages, including sheep-shearing, butter making, music, tools and instruments used in days gone by, etc. These provide entertainment for all the family, including marching bands, fun and games, crafts and carnivals.
